Five hundred years ago, Seville was the protagonist and exceptional part of the greatest landmark in the history of the world’s oceans up to that time: The First Circumnavigation of the World. This was the starting point of the expedition with five ships and 243 men on August 10, 1519, and this was also the port of arrival of the Nao Victoria, the only ship that resisted the affront on September 8, 1522.
Five centuries later, our city wants to continue showing off the spirit of the big companies and the big projects that led and encouraged Ferdinand Magellan and Juan Sebastián Elcano to make this trip. But now, in the 21st century, with the aspiration to respond to the new global challenges.
In 2017, we set out to promote from the city of Seville, an international meeting to discuss new challenges nowadays. All this will allow us to make progress at the local level towards more inclusive and economically, socially and environmentally sustainable development.
Thus, the Global Forum of Local Governments will continue to be a space to initiate and consolidate collaborations, paying special attention to countries and institutions that have a special link with the commemoration of the V Centenary of the First Voyage Around the World.
